Cupolas
Designs
The cupola is an icon of early American architecture, commonly
found adorning barn roofs across New England and beyond. Known
for our expertise in residential New England architecture
we enjoy working with clients to help them choose an appropriate
cupola which will compliment their structure. A properly scaled,
dimensioned and detailed cupola will add the finishing touch
to both new construction and any antique building. They can
be constructed to provide natural light in place of a skylight
and a spiral staircase can be added to use it as a lookout.
Our masterful designs are not exact reproductions of existing
antique cupolas, rather they are unique adaptations which
are thoughtfully and intentionally planned and constructed
to capture the spirit and character of traditional early American
architecture. Designed for functionality and performance,
a properly scaled and detailed cupola can beautify a structure
and is a nostalgic remnant from New England vernacular. Our
designs allow you to choose from a range of features such
as windows, wood louvers, spires and copper trim.

Each hand made cupola is carefully scaled
and proportioned to compliment the particular barn
or carriage shed it will adorn, both in size
and detailing. Its all-wood construction comes standard with
louvered wood windows and copper flashing on the mid-roof,
cedar-shingled top roof and a wood spire. Shipped in three
parts, the cupola base is finished with shiplap pine and is
easily assembled and installed by your general contractor.
Colonial, Federal and Greek
Revival styles are available in three standard sizes
(based on the square base size and overall height). Standard
base sizes are 36" sq., 42" sq. and 48" sq.
for colonial styles and federal styles in 42" sq. and
48" sq. but either can be adjusted to match any structure.
Average heights of completely assembled cupolas range from
7' to 12' tall. Classic Colonial Homes, Inc. will determine
appropriate size and style if plans or pictures and dimensions
of the structure are provided.
